Kuniyoshi: The Ukiyo-e Master Who Broke the Rules 🎨

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797 to 1861) worked at the tail end of the Edo period, a moment when Japanese woodblock printing, or ukiyo-e, was reaching for new theatrical heights. Kuniyoshi is remembered as the artist who dragged the genre into the fantastical, reshaping the musha-e (warrior print) and yōkai-e (monster print) traditions with a wit and dynamism that still feels startlingly modern.

What sets The Palace of the Dragon King apart is Kuniyoshi's treatment of the triptych format itself.
