Long before the museum as we know it existed, collectors of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries filled wunderkammer, cabinets of curiosities, with the strange and the sublime: bones, preserved specimens, crystals, shells and objects thought to hold mystical power. These cabinets were less about order than wonder, an attempt to hold the whole strange, spectacular world in a single room.

Camille Chew is an American illustrator whose work sits at the intersection of mythology, fantasy and folk art, with the occult as a recurring thread throughout her practice. Chew's design revives that tradition for a contemporary audience. Laid out across a deep midnight-teal ground scattered with tiny stars, her composition catalogues an entire glossary of occult ephemera: a palm-reading hand inked with mystical symbols, a two-headed snake, a flickering candle, a jarred specimen, a fluttering moth with eyes on its wings, a fish skeleton, an hourglass, a set of brass scales and clusters of spotted toadstools. Bones, crystals and a glowing geode round out the collection, each rendered in Chew's signature palette of teal, burnt orange, olive and pink. It is less a single image than an index of the uncanny, and it rewards the kind of close, patient looking that only a 1000-piece puzzle can demand.
