  • Coffee breaks and lunch hours ☕ A few relaxing minutes of mindful puzzling, away from your desk.

Meet Pablo Picatso: A Cat Among the Cubists 😸

Illustrated by Nia Gould, the design shows a sleek black cat perched in a faceted glass vase, tail curling skyward, surrounded by geometric blooms in powdery pink and sunshine yellow. The flowers are built from angular planes, spirals and zigzag patterns rather than soft petals. The cat itself is rendered in bold, scratchy black marks, with a wry expression that suggests it knows exactly how funny this all is.

The colour palette is gently modern, with sage greens, blush pinks and a buttery yellow tabletop, all set against a warm, chalky cream. It is Picasso’s visual language, filtered through a contemporary, playful hand. Even the title lettering, with its wobbly hand-drawn capitals, signals that this is a tribute with a sense of humour.

Fascinating Facts to Share Over the Puzzle Table ☕

Gould’s design is a witty homage rather than a copy, and the real Picasso gives it plenty to riff on:

  • Cubism changed everything. Picasso and Georges Braque developed Cubism in the early 1900s, breaking subjects into fragmented planes and showing several viewpoints at once. The vase and blooms here nod directly to that approach. 🔷
  • Picasso really did paint cats. His 1939 work Cat Seizing a Bird is among his best-known animal studies, and felines turn up repeatedly in his wider output.
  • Still lifes were a Cubist playground. Vases, bottles, fruit and tabletops were favourite subjects, which makes a flower vase on a yellow table the perfect setting for a tribute.
  • He was astonishingly prolific. Picasso is widely credited with producing tens of thousands of works across paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture and ceramics, so there is no shortage of inspiration to draw on.
  • The name says it all. Picasso was born in Málaga in 1881 and baptised with a famously epic string of names. “Picatso” has a lot to live up to, but this cat carries it off with confidence. 😼
