Lowry’s fascination with the sea is well documented and upon retiring in the 1950s he began to spend more time in the North East of England, often staying at the Seaburn Hotel in Sunderland, not far from South Shields. Here Lowry was able to explore his passion for seascapes. Watercolour is the one medium which the artist used only occasionally. It is likely that its obvious limitation, speed of drying, made it a less suitable vehicle for his thoughtful temperament than pastel, or of course oils, both of which can be developed at leisure.
