Van Gogh painted Langlois Bridge at Arles with Women in 1888, shortly after moving from Paris to the south of France. Tired of the bustle of the city, he found solace in Provence, writing of its "extraordinarily beautiful" skies and radiant light. The bridge itself, a drawbridge just south of Arles, inspired him to create not only four paintings but also sketches and watercolours. The dynamic diagonal of the canal leads the eye towards the structure and the humble wagon crossing, encapsulating both rural life and Van Gogh’s fascination with movement.

Fun fact: Van Gogh was captivated by Japanese woodblock prints at the time, and the bridge motif echoes this influence with its clean lines and strong sense of perspective.
