There is a particular kind of stillness that only exists in a painting caught mid-drama, and Olga Suvorova's The Duel is a masterclass in it. Two figures in ornately embellished gold armour stand locked in confrontation, swords crossed, capes caught mid-flourish. Suvorova never says, and that is precisely the point.

Born in Russia in 1966, Suvorova comes from a three-generation dynasty of artists and trained in monumental composition at the prestigious St Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts, the same rigorous tradition that produced generations of Russia's finest painters. Her work carries a distinct nostalgia for the St Petersburg "World of Art" movement, with its romance for the eighteenth century, filtered through influences as eclectic as the Pre-Raphaelites, Gustav Klimt's decorative gilding, and the solemn, gold-ground formality of traditional Russian icons. It is a heady combination, part fairy tale, part reliquary, entirely her own.
