Golden Armour, Guarded Gaze: A Collectible Piece of Contemporary Art, in Puzzle Form ⚔️
There is a particular kind of stillness that only exists in a painting caught mid-drama, and Olga Suvorova's The Duel is a masterclass in it. Two figures in ornately embellished gold armour stand locked in confrontation, swords crossed, capes caught mid-flourish. Behind them, a woman in pale silk regards the scene with an expression that gives absolutely nothing away. Is she the cause of the quarrel? A witness? A memory? Suvorova never says, and that is precisely the point.
Born in Russia in 1966, Suvorova comes from a three-generation dynasty of artists and trained in monumental composition at the prestigious St Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts, the same rigorous tradition that produced generations of Russia's finest painters. Her work carries a distinct nostalgia for the St Petersburg "World of Art" movement, with its romance for the eighteenth century, filtered through influences as eclectic as the Pre-Raphaelites, Gustav Klimt's decorative gilding, and the solemn, gold-ground formality of traditional Russian icons. It is a heady combination, part fairy tale, part reliquary, entirely her own.
Pomegranate has translated Suvorova's exuberant palette into a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle that does the original genuine justice. Every plume of the birds threading through the composition, every fleck of gold leaf on the armour, is rendered on high-quality 250-GSM matte artpaper, chosen specifically to eliminate glare and hold colour with real fidelity. The pieces themselves are ribbon-cut from thick board for a satisfyingly snug fit and minimal dust, which matters enormously once you are several hours deep into reassembling a woman's inscrutable expression from three hundred nearly identical skin-toned pieces.
Now imagine assembling it, piece by deliberate piece.
