Who Was Hilma af Klint?
Born in 1862, Hilma af Klint shattered the expectations of her time. Trained at Stockholmās Royal Academy of Fine Arts, she began her career painting traditional subjects ā think portraits and botanical illustrations. But in 1906, guided by spiritual visions and esoteric philosophies, she pivoted toward abstraction. The resulting canvases were immense, vibrant, and symbolically rich ā among the first truly abstract works in Western art history.
While her male contemporaries wrote manifestos and held exhibitions, af Klint deliberately kept her revolutionary pieces under wraps. She believed the world wasnāt ready. And perhaps she was right. It wasnāt until 1986 ā over four decades after her death ā that her work finally began to receive the acclaim it so richly deserved.
