Vincent Van Gogh painted several versions of A Wheatfield, with Cypresses (1889) during his stay at a mental asylum in the village of St-Rémy, southern France. A first version, which he described as a study, was painted on location in late June 1889. He also made smaller copies for his mother and sister.
The painting depicts a typical St-Rémy landscape which consists of Provençal motifs such as a golden wheat field, tall evergreen cypresses and an olive bush pitted against the backdrop of the blue Alpilles mountains. This artwork embodies perfectly the lively landscape of southern France where he spent much of his time painting outdoors during the summer mistral - the strong, northwesterly wind from the south. The high quality of this jigsaw puzzle captures precisely those powerful rhythmic lines and swirling brushstrokes that illustrate Van Gogh's penchant for depicting nature in all her vitality.
