To piece this puzzle together is to spend quality time in the company of a genius who saw the natural world as the greatest work of art ever created. š§©šØ
The artwork originates from Ernst Haeckel's landmark publicationĀ Kunstformen der NaturĀ (Art Forms in Nature), a series of lithographic plates that Haeckel produced between 1899 and 1904. Plate 99, titledĀ TrochilidaeĀ ā the scientific family name for hummingbirds ā is among the most celebrated images in the entire collection, and with very good reason. Haeckel populated his composition with no fewer than a dozen distinct species, each hovering, darting or perching across a lush tropical backdrop of fern fronds, trailing vines and delicate pink blooms. A tiny woven nest, cradling a clutch of miniature eggs, is tucked almost tenderly into the lower left corner. It is a scene of extraordinary richness, every brushstroke alive with scientific precision and artistic rapture in equal measure.
There is a moment, in the quiet hours of a Sunday afternoon, when the world slows down and the only thing that matters is the satisfyingĀ clickĀ of a puzzle piece finding its place.
Piatnik, the venerable Viennese games and puzzle house founded in 1824, has long been the gold standard forĀ premium jigsaw puzzlesĀ in Europe. Their reputation for crisp printing, satisfying piece thickness and precision-cut interlocking is well earned, and this edition does nothing to diminish it. The completed puzzle measures 68 x 48 centimetres, making it a genuinely substantial piece ā large enough to feel like a true achievement when the final piece slots home. š
Once complete, the Haeckel Hummingbirds is the kind of image that deserves to be preserved and displayed. We strongly recommend our jigsaw puzzle frame. š¼ļø
