In Conversation with a Puzzler: Why Jigsaw Puzzles?

At Rest In Pieces, we spoke to some of our avid puzzlers about what drew them to the world of jigsaw puzzling. Here's why they kept coming back for more:

1. Jigsaw puzzles are the best way to spend time with loved ones and build beautiful memories.

"I started puzzling as a young girl in Scotland. I grew up in a family of six and at Christmas we always got a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle to share. We would have so much fun as a family around the fireplace. It was a very social activity, and sometimes even got competitive! The recent COVID-19 lockdowns got me to force my husband to pick up puzzling again with me, and it brought back fond memories of those times as a little girl. Ever since COVID-19 we've been addicted to puzzling and now we try to do one every weekend together...even after lockdown has ended!
I think jigsaw puzzles just might be the best way to spend time with loved ones, and build memories!"

2. Jigsaw puzzling makes relationships stronger!

"Like most people I got into puzzling because of COVID. I thought it would be a fun activity to do whilst we were stuck inside, so I decided to buy a 1000-piece puzzle from Rest In Pieces. My partner was apprehensive at first about wasting time on such a "meaningless" activity...12 puzzles later and we have now successfully developed our own puzzle language! We know what each other is talking about when we say we're looking for a "fancy" piece or a "bog standard" piece. I think the best thing we've gained from this though is that we've learned to spend time together without being on our phones. It's honestly a match made in heaven...pun intended!"

3. Jigsaw puzzles are an easy cost-effective date activity.

"I saw my nan and pops having fun doing a jigsaw puzzle together at their table one night and thought it might be an interesting activity to try out with my girlfriend. I searched online because we had just gone into lockdown and didn't realise how cheap they were! I honestly think that might be the best date I've ever had (and the cheapest too!!)"

4. Jigsaw puzzles are therapeutic and the perfect tool to help relieve stress.

"I'm a psychologist and am constantly telling clients how they can be more mindful every day. But the truth is even I get so distracted with life at times and don't practice what I preach. So I decided to buy a jigsaw puzzle and forced myself to just sit down and do it. I felt so much better in just 10 minutes of doing the puzzle! I felt that focusing on finding matching pieces really helped clear my mind and blocked out the million other things I had going on."

-Rani, 38

And if the above hasn't convinced you, then maybe this will:

5. You get to add dissectologist to your dating profile. Duh.

"I saw her Tinder profile said she was a dissectologist, so I was curious and messaged her asking what it was. Needless to say I brought a 1000 piece puzzle along to our second date and can now confidently call her my girlfriend! I didn't expect them to be so much fun (or to land me a girlfriend for that matter)."

So there you have it folks. Buying a jigsaw puzzle might just be the best purchase you ever make.
