It was there, tucked away from the grandeur of Amsterdam's map trade, that he produced the \u003cem\u003eAtlas Coelestis seu Harmonia Macrocosmica\u003c\/em\u003e: a celestial atlas conceived as the historical preface to a far larger, never-completed treatise on cosmography. Around the celestial globe, cherubs unfurl gilded banners, mythological beasts stretch across the firmament (that improbable red lobster is Cancer, mid-scuttle), and in the lower corners, allegorical astronomers, thought to gesture towards the competing cosmological models of Ptolemy, Copernicus and Tycho Brahe, pore over globes and instruments.
